Celebrating Women’s History Month

Lessons in Leadership at Bond Vet
Kelly Rusinak

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, it’s important to reflect on the journeys of women leaders who have inspired change. My career path is deeply personal, rooted in three generations of my family serving in the U.S. Navy. I often think of Joy Bright Hancock, who served in the Navy during both World Wars, and was a champion of women’s integration into the ranks. Her passion paved the way for future generations and made our military stronger by ensuring women had a seat at the table. Her courage is my reminder that women belong in every decision-making room.

My Navy experiences shaped my leadership style, teaching me the importance of prioritizing my team. Each challenge is an opportunity for growth. There are rarely clear answers to operational problems, but with trust, collaboration and open communication teams can navigate complexities together.

I encourage women in our industry to share their perspectives – veterinary medicine will continue to improve because of your ideas! Whenever I feel imposter syndrome start to creep in, I embrace the mindset of “Why not me?” Your insights are invaluable and should be heard.

To those starting your careers, embrace the journey of learning and growth—we’re all figuring it out together. At Bond Vet, I’m proud that women make up 50% of our leadership team and 63% of our field leaders. Together, we’re setting a new standard and inspiring the next generation.

As we honor Women’s History Month, let’s celebrate pioneers like Joy Bright Hancock and the many women who paved the way. Their stories remind us that true leadership is about the courage to challenge the status quo. Let’s support each other as we move forward.

Happy Women’s History Month!
